Our innovative approach to sport concussion assessment and management fosters a paradigm of precision medicine by tailoring medical decisions and management strategies to each athlete.

Who is BCI?

The Benson Concussion Institute was founded by Dr. Brian Benson. Dr. Benson is a sport medicine physician and clinician-scientist who is passionate about understanding the human brain, its function, and how it is affected after a traumatic brain injury sustained during sport.

It is Dr. Benson's firm belief that "If you are not doing innovation then you are merely following and accepting the current standard of care." There is a dire need for integrated, solution-driven, research oriented approaches to continuously improve the standard of concussion care in today’s highly competitive sport environment. Our group has been motivated to develop objective, reliable functional measures of neurological impairment following concussion, with the goal of informing clinical decision-making and individualized management.

Our innovative approach to sport concussion assessment and management fosters a paradigm of precision medicine by tailoring medical decisions and management strategies to the unique characteristics of each athlete. It facilitates individualized, targeted post-concussion therapeutic interventions applied to those who will benefit, sparing expense, time, unnecessary investigations and rehabilitation strategies for those who will not.

An athlete's brain is their command center for athletic performance, and is going to be needed far beyond their sporting career.

More than any other injury, a concussion needs to be treated with the utmost respect from the outset of injury through recovery.

BCI COVID-19 Response

BCI is taking all of the necessary steps in response to COVID-19. Please read up on the changes we will be making and the precautions we’ll be taking during this pandemic.

The Benson Concussion Institute continues to operate with enhanced hygiene and sanitation practices.

Our regular clinical hours during this time may be reduced, depending on patient volume and the needs of our staff.  We will continue to be reachable by phone and email during regular business hours.

All travelers returning from outside Canada should self-isolate for 14 days and monitor for symptoms.  If you develop symptoms – cough, fever or difficulty breathing – stay home and complete the online COVID-19 self-assessment.  Do not go to the ER or doctor's office.

If you have traveled outside of Canada within the last 14 days, or have visited a Canadian location where you may have been exposed to a known case of COVID-19, have a fever, cough, shortness of breath or flu-like symptoms, please contact us at 587-830-2240 to cancel your appointment to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Patients being booked for appointments will be asked appropriate screening questions by Group23 Sports Medicine staff to prevent exposure and spread of COVID-19. Screening questions are developed by Alberta Health Services and are changed based on the current status of COVID-19.  Social distancing of 2m spacing of patients seated in the waiting area will be adhered.  Rooms, computers, and equipment are always sanitized between uses.

If, after having booked your appointment, you develop fever, cough, shortness of breath or flu-like symptoms, please contact us to cancel your appointment. After cancelling your appointment, we will ask you to call back in two weeks to reassess if we are able to book you at that time based on the screening criteria in effect on that date.  General advice and/or follow-up appointments can be arranged via phone pending each patient's unique situation.

As the situation is being assessed daily, with regular updates to protocols, we recommend patients refer to the AHS sites for full information:

To ensure we continue to provide exceptional customer care while staying up to date on events associated with COVID-19, we will limit our social media and communication updates to align with significant changes in our operations.
